So I was part of a group exhibition this term at university. It was a really good learning experience and good preparation for next year. The organising of the exhibition itself went well, we worked well as a group and although we left a few things a bit late we got it all done and i was so happy with the results. For my own work i wanted to look into ideas of the male gaze. The project brief was to ask ourselves a question and try to answer it. Here is my artists statement.
Question- Can a female photographer project the essence of the Male Gaze within her images?
Following an interest in the diverse relationship between the sexes, I wanted to look into the theories of the Male Gaze. As a female photographer I felt drawn to explore whether I could mimic the feel of the Male Gaze, where there was none. While taking images of women I wanted to try to embody the mind of a male photographer. In order to strip down the barrier of technology between the model, and me I chose to use a Pin Hole camera, creating images that reflect a dreamlike fantasy state.
In coming to a conclusion in this project I have found that, personally, it is not possible for me to create this illusion of the Male Gaze. This may be a reflection of myself and this alone raises many more questions that I will continue to explore within my work.
