This is my project from my last term of last year. I wanted to look into the modern commodity of ‘Lads Mags,’ and the images that are shown of women in them. They have recently received a lot of critism for the way that they show and write about women which has consequently raised many alarm bells as to the way in which the female form is being portrayed to a male audience in modern day times.
The
female body both receives and bears the male gaze, and as such is a subject of
interest to me. In modern day culture the female nude is an everyday commodity;
Films, Advertising, Fashion, Art and Entertainment are rarely seen without it.
The ‘Male Gaze’ both controls the way that we see these images and the way that
women in the images react with the camera/viewer. They reflect they gaze that
they expect is upon them. ‘A women watches herself being looked at’ John
Berger.
I aimed to take the imagery and
text from these magazines and reappropriate them into my own imagery. I wanted to
change the way that they are seen and how the women are viewed. To do this I created a series of negative contact prints from the magazines in the
darkroom. To capture the ‘under layers’ of the magazine, the foundations on
which the magazines are built. And to explore the way the women are being used
and using the male gaze.
I feel that is was a successful project, it was an interesting exploration of media and i found it eye-opening looking at the genre of lads mags.
